Green School
Gurraneasig NS has been a very active and proud Green School since 2013. Each year we elect a Green Schools Committee to help keep the school on track with a variety of environmental issues. Green Schools is Ireland’s leading student-led environmental management and award programme, working with primary and secondary schools across the country. Promoting long-term, whole-school action for the environment. The programme is operated and co-ordinated by the Environmental Education Unit of An Taisce (FEE member for Ireland). Green Schools Themes
Green Schools is separated into 6 key theme areas.
Litter and waste Focusing on litter and waste issues, encouraging a sense of responsibility. At Gurraneasig we have several litter picking days in our local area and on our local beach.
Energy Looking at the steps which can be taken at school to reduce energy consumption and raise awareness of climate change. At our school we turn off lights and energy consuming equipment.
Water Developing awareness around water conservation and how to effectively manage this important resource in schools. Gurraneasig pupils turn off taps and conserve water where possible.
Travel Increasing the number of students walking, cycling, scooting, using public transport or carpooling to school. Many pupils car pool and several of the older kids cycle to and from school.
Biodiversity Increasing awareness in schools of the importance of native plants, animals and habitats. Gurraneasig has a very active garden with lots of produce being grown, a brand new Good Bug Hotel and lots of smaller projects on going.
European and global citizenship Looking at areas of litter and waste in our global community, issues surrounding energy use globally and raising awareness of marine eco-systems and the work being done to save them.
