January 2023 Newsletter

Dear Parents/Guardians.

Athbhliain faoi shéan is faoi mhaise daoibh go léir! I would like to extend a warm Happy New Year to everybody and hope that 2023 is a healthy & prosperous year to you all. Happy New Year everyone.

We have seen a very significant increase in the usual winter viral infections. This includes an increase in flu, RSV and now Covid-19. To this end we ask you to adhere to public health advice - please be diligent and do not send children to school who are displaying symptoms.

Enrolment Day

Parent Teacher Meetings:

Arrangements for PT meetings to be confirmed in the next 2 weeks and will be communicated by the class teacher as soon as possible, for the week of Monday the 30th of January.

School Closures – Spring Term:

Please note the school will be closed on

  • Monday the 6th of February for St. Brigid’s Day.
  • Thursday 16th & Friday 17th February (incl) for mid-term break.
  • Friday the 17th of March for St. Patrick’s Day.

School will close for Easter Holidays at 12pm on Friday March 31st to Friday 14th of April inclusive.

The school will close for a half day for Primary Language Curriculum Day. We have yet to pick a date for this but hope to do so shortly and will get in touch with you then.

Recent Events:

Christmas Fair 20th of Dec -

Each class put on a performance and thank you all for making it a very special day.

Incidental Inspection (unannounced)

Inspector Seán O’Briain called to the school on the 20th of October and visited classes. Overall, he was very happy!

External Visits
  • 6th class went to Sáile Kinsale for Mental Health Awareness Day on the 10th of October. Thanks Mrs. Byrne & Parents.
  • 5th and 6th class went to a Christmas Concert to Coláiste na Toirbhirte in Bandon on Wednesday the 30th of Nov.

Thank you parents for helping out the school with spins to and from these events and to the teachers for coordinating them.

Maths Week 2022 (15th – 22nd Oct)

Thanks Ms. White for her efforts in coordinating quizzes/ math trails etc.

Science Week & Anti Bullying Week
Student Council

They have a meeting every second week. They helped plan Christmas & Charities events and liaise with the Principal, the PA and other teachers.

Green Schools

The committee is set up.

Active Schools Committee

They are always busy (Student Council for 2022/23)

Kilbrittain GAA skills & games.

We had 3 sessions in October 2022

Mobile Library

The library bus service has resumed every second Friday

Other items
  • Bike shed was completed in November after a drawn-out process but it looks great!
  • Halloween Dress Up was held on Friday 28th of October
  • Readathon in November for Kilbrittain Welfare Group raised money for a very worthy cause
  • Anti–Bullying workshop took place with PDST in school for the staff on the 7th of December.
  • Team Home Christmas box appeal. Thanks PA
  • Tennis will be starting on Thursdays the 19th of January for 4 weeks

Safer Internet Day:

Safer Internet Day (SID) is an EU wide initiative to promote a safer internet for all users, especially young people. It is promoted in Ireland by the PDST Technology in Education and Webwise. Please see the following link for further information: http://www.saferinternetday.ie/

Parents Association

A special thank you to Barbara & all the parents for coordinating all the various fundraising events that keep our school going. We are very appreciative of our Parents Association, who go the extra mile, as we strive to make Gurraneasig NS a fun and exciting school to attend.

Clothes Recycling Fundraiser:

The school is participating in the Cash for Clobber fundraiser with Cookstown Textile Recyclers this term. So, gather up your unused clothes and help raise money for the school. All clean and dry clothes, shoes (pairs only please in a separate bag if possible), hats, gloves, handbags, and household textiles (no blankets, quilts or pillows) will be collected. Please put your recyclable items in large refuse bags. Please note that as our Enrolment Day is Tuesday the 14th of February, we ask you to please wait until this is over before dropping off bags to school on either Wednesday the 15th, Monday 20th and 21st of February.
